Development of new Peatland Farming based business in the Kymenlaakso region (SuoLiike)

SuoLiike project description in Finnish can be found here

SuoLiike-project responds to the need to identify and develop new business opportunities for the peat production chain as peat market is getting more and more restricted and there is growing need for replacements. The project identifies and tests potential plants that are suitable for bog and wetland farming and that are commercially interesting. In addition, the goal is to develop farming techniques and production activities and product ideas based on bog farming.

In addition, the goal of the project aims to support the achievement of national carbon neutrality targets (vai goals?) and the growth or preservation of carbon sinks. In the cultivation experiments, the carbon economy is also studied with gas measurements and the possibilities and effectiveness of biochar.
The SuoLiike project investigates e.g.

  • Potential production area for novel ways of utilisation of peat bogs, customer needs for products and markets for plants produced in decommissioned peat removal areas
  • Suitable cultivation technology, yield potential and quality requirements in the processing of food, biomass and plants with bioactive features
  • Legislation related to the operation and references from abroad
  • Possible business concepts and conditions for profitability

Kouvola Innovation is the main implementer of the project, and the project partners are Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKLI). The project involves cooperation with key stakeholders and utilizes existing research data.
